Oklahoma Coach Brent Venables Gives Bad News Injury Report on Injured Sooners

Andrel Anthony and McKade Mettauer are among the leaders on the team at their respective positions and both went down Saturday against Texas.

Oklahoma coach Brent Venables gave an injury report on Monday night after practice, and the news isn’t good.

Offensive guard McKade Mettauer, who left the Texas game with a protective boot on his left foot with what Venables called an ankle sprain, “best-case scenario for him will be back sooner rather than later,” Venables said.

The news wasn’t wasn’t nearly as hopeful, however, for leading receiver Andrel Anthony.

Venables said Anthony, who went down in the fourth quarter with a leg injury, “is gonna have to have season-ending surgery.”

“It’s tough,” Venables said. “You hate it for him. We have other guys, but you hate it for Andrel, for how hard he’s worked. We got to 6-0 and he had a big part in helping us get there. But, all his best football is still in front of him. He’ll have a great career on the back end of this surgery.”

Venables said cornerback Gentry Williams “is good, he practiced today.” Williams also left the fourth quarter with an injury but took part in the postgame press conference.

Mettauer is a fifth-year senior from the Houston area and three-year starter after transferring from Cal. He’s started at right guard every game this year and is among the team leaders in total snaps.

Anthony is a transfer from Michigan and a Detroit native who leads the Sooners with 429 yards receiving and ranks second with 27 catches.

The No. 5-ranked Sooners (6-0 overall, 3-0 Big 12 Conference) have an open date this Saturday after beating then-No. 3 Texas 34-30 on Saturday in the Cotton Bowl.

OU’s next game is at home on Oct. 21 against Big 12 newcomer UCF.

Mettauer, from the Houston area, was replaced Saturday by Miami-OH transfer Caleb Shaffer, who posted a Pro Football Focus grade of 56.0 against the Longhorns and has played 55 snaps so far this year after logging almost 2,300 snaps at Miami. Mettauer has played 414 offensive snaps this season, according to PFF, and has logged 2,989 snaps in his career, which includes three seasons as a starter at Cal.

The 6-1, 192-pound Anthony has played 290 snaps for the Sooners this season, including 55 against Texas, when he caught five passes for 42 yards. A junior and former starter for the Wolverines, Anthony has played 873 total offensive snaps in college. He’s averaging 15.9 yards per catch this season and a team-high 71 yards per game. His production in the receiver corps may be harder to replace, but the Sooners have spread the ball around well, as seven different players have at least 10 receptions.
