The 39-year-old had been in London and is thought to have held talks with West Ham about the possibility of replacing David Moyes in the summer, but the prospect of such a move has since been deemed unlikely.
West Ham clearly admire Amorim and the job he has done with Sporting in Portugal over the last three seasons.
After a brief, but successful, stint in charge of Braga – winning the Taca da Liga after taking over in mid-December 2019 – Sporting activated Amorim’s buyout clause to bring him to the club in March the following year.
In his first full season, Amorim delivered the club’s first league title in 19 years and looks set to add to that this term, with Sporting seven points clear at the top of the table. They are also in the Taca da Liga final again, having won the trophy under his guidance in 2021 and 2022.
With Moyes’ West Ham future uncertain – a decision about whether or not he will continue at the club is not set to be made until the end of the campaign – the Hammers expressed their interest in Amorim as a potential candidate.
However, the 39-year-old does not appear likely to take the position and is similarly unfancied to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, leading to speculation that he may end up staying at Sporting – at least for one more year.
West Ham fans will have to hope that whoever is hired instead – be that Graham Potter or Julen Lopetegui or someone else entirely – is able to lift the club to the next level of its evolution.
In other West Ham news, a decision has been made already on another manager linked to the job.
