Report: Edmonton Oilers prospect Philip Broberg expected to miss 2-3 weeks with injury

A potential trade target is expected to miss some time.

According to Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic, Edmonton Oilers defenseman Philip Broberg could be out of game action for the next two to three weeks with a deep bruise.

Broberg reportedly suffered the injury in a game on Feb. 10 between the Oilers’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors, and the San Jose Barracuda, the primary affiliate of the San Jose Sharks.

It was originally stated that Broberg was going to miss a couple of games due to the bruise. However, according Nugent-Bowman, the 22-year-old has been in Edmonton over the last few days to receive treatment, having sat out Bakersfield’s last five games. The projected recovery time could take Broberg until after the trade deadline.

Broberg has been in trade talks over the past few months after the Oilers granted the young blueliner permission to seek a new home in early December. He is in the final year of his entry-level contract with a cap hit of $863,333, and an AAV of $1,713,333.

Broberg had been playing with Bakersfield since late November, having had a couple of stints with the Oilers this season. In 29 games with the Condors, the Orebro, Sweden native had scored a goal and 18 assists.

In 10 games with Edmonton this season, Broberg has not registered a point.

Broberg has played 79 NHL games over the past three seasons, scoring two goals and nine assists. The Skellefteå product also played nine games during the Oilers’ run to the second round of the playoffs last spring.
