Leeds United send message to Southampton in Championship fight as Daniel Farke explains why

Leeds United moved back into second place in the Championship with a 2-0 victory at Plymouth Argyle

Leeds United may have had the temperature turned up on them once again in the race for promotion to the Premier League, but they handled it at Plymouth Argyle with all the hallmarks of a champion side. In the aftermath of their victory in Plymouth, it was that approach, mindset and ability that please Leeds boss Daniel Farke most of all.

Following on from Southampton’s win at West Bromwich Albion last night, the onus was on Leeds to keep their incredible winning run going. They duly obliged with a 2-0 victory at Home Park, making it eight successive victories to start 2024, with just one goal conceded in those games.

A Wilfried Gnonto first half opener was added to by Georginio Rutter in the second half to see off a stubborn opponent and bring the Whites three points, despite a far from vintage display on the road. Leeds now sit back in second place, two points ahead of Southampton, who play their game in hand next week against Hull City at the St Mary’s Stadium.

With the pressure rising each week and the need to keep winning remaining for fear of dropping any points, Farke was delighted with his side’s display. Describing the performance he said;: “Very mature. I’m a happy man today.

“No other team since October has left here with three points. I liked our maturity a lot today. Plymouth are really good and hard to beat at home. Always there are periods when you have to dig in and show compactness here. Twenty to 25 minutes in the second half we had to concentrate against the ball. We stayed on it and stayed focused.

“Fantastic goal at 2-0. Should score easier than we did. It could have been more comfortable, but I am more than happy with the win and clean sheet. It was a balanced performance and mature.”
