Kodi Burns renews contract, will be at Auburn ‘a long time’

Auburn receivers coach Kodi Burns won’t be going anywhere.

Burns, whose initial Auburn contract was set to expire on Jan. 31, has reupped with the program and signed a new contract according to head coach Gus Malzahn.

“He’s going to be at Auburn for a long time,” Malzahn said Tuesday in Mobile, where he watched five former players during Senior Bowl practice at Ladd Peebles Stadium.

Burns joined Malzahn’s staff in Feb. 2016, replacing former receivers coach Dameyune Craig, and originally signed a two-year deal worth $350,000 annually, including $250,000 in base salary and $50,000 each for endorsement rights and media and appearances.

Numbers for Burns’ new deal have yet to be released by Auburn.

Burns helped coach a receiving corps that was among Auburn’s best in recent memory this past season, with Ryan Davis breaking the school’s single-season record for receptions and three players finishing with at least 500 yards receiving. It was the first time since 2010 that Auburn has three receivers finish with at least 500 receiving yards.

He has also done well in recruiting, helping the Tigers bring in an impressive haul of receiver recruits for the 2018 class. Two of them, four-star prospect Seth Williams and three-star prospect Shedrick Jackson, already signed during December’s early signing period, while Jackson is currently enrolled in classes. Auburn also holds commitments from four-star receivers Matthew Hill and Anthony Schwartz, the latter being the fastest recruit in the country.

With Burns extending his contract with Auburn, and linebackers coach Travis Williams extending his deal, it means only one assistant coach from last season is no longer on staff. Former offensive line coach Herb Hand left last week to become the offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator at Texas, while Malzahn replaced him with the man Hand originally succeeded: J.B. Grimes. The Tigers also added defensive backs coach Marcus Woodson as the 10th assistant to coach alongside Greg Brown in the secondary.
