Stan Drayton, a seasoned football coach with over three decades of experience, has been appointed as Penn State’s new running backs coach. Drayton’s extensive coaching career includes notable positions at Ohio State, where he served as running backs coach from 2012 to 2014, and as head coach at Temple University from 2022 to 2024.
During his tenure at Ohio State, Drayton made significant contributions to the team’s success. In 2012, he guided the Buckeyes’ running backs to 1,536 yards and 21 touchdowns, averaging 5.4 yards per carry during the team’s undefeated 12-0 season. His coaching prowess was further demonstrated in 2014 when he mentored Ezekiel Elliott, who amassed 1,878 rushing yards, ranking third nationally and setting a new Ohio State record.
After his time at Ohio State, Drayton continued to make an impact in the football world. He served as the running backs coach for the Chicago Bears from 2015 to 2016, where he coached rookie Jordan Howard to 1,313 rushing yards in 2016, the second-highest in the NFL that season. Drayton then joined the University of Texas as associate head coach and running backs coach from 2017 to 2021, mentoring Bijan Robinson, who became a top-10 NFL draft pick.
In 2022, Drayton took on the role of head coach at Temple University, leading the Owls through the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Despite facing challenges, including a 9–25 record and no postseason appearances, Drayton’s leadership experience at Temple adds valuable depth to his coaching portfolio.
Drayton’s return to Penn State as running backs coach is expected to bring a wealth of experience and a proven track record of developing successful running backs, further strengthening the Nittany Lions’ football program.
