Authorities are at the scene of a school bus crash that is being described as a “mass casualty” event in northern Minnesota Thursday morning.

Limited information has been shared with the public, but the Minnesota State Patrol says the crash happened at 7:52 a.m. on County Road 5 and Town Line Road in Cherry Township.

According to Northern News News, a St. Louis County school bus carrying more than 20 students from the Cherry School was T-boned by a driver, causing it to roll over.

MSP has updated its crash report since initial reporting and confirms that a 2006 Toyota RAV4 struck the school bus, injuring 21 students; however, their injuries are considered minor.

So far, 12 students have reportedly been taken to a hospital.

The bus driver was airlifted to a hospital in Virginia with serious injuries, while the Toyota driver, a 19-year-old woman from Alborn, was also taken to a hospital in Duluth with “life-threatening” injuries.

Police say alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

Minnesota Congressman Pete Stauber released a statement on Facebook regarding the crash. He said he contacted the St. Louis County sheriff’s office and asked the community to “join [him] in praying for everyone involved.”
