KERNERSVILLE, N.C. — A Winston-Salem family is mourning the loss of 17-year-old Armando Medel Ortiz after a fatal car crash on Thursday, March 27.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash happened at 4:08 a.m. on Union Cross Road in Forsyth County. Investigators say Armando was driving west when he crossed the centerline, veered off the left side of the road, and struck a tree head-on. Despite wearing his seatbelt, Armando died at the scene. Officials say excessive speed contributed to the crash.

A Devastated Father, Holding on to Strength

Armando’s father, Fernando Medel, is heartbroken but says he has to stay strong for his family, especially his 13-year-old daughter.

“I feel so bad, but I have to be strong because we still have a little girl. She’s 13 years old,” Fernando said.

Fernando recalls the heartbreaking moment he got the call.

“My little girl called me. She is 13 years old and said, ‘Dad, Armando got into a big accident and he’s dead,’” he remembered.

Through his pain, Fernando cherishes the 17 years he had with his son.

“My only son, Armando, he’s a real, real nice son. I think he is the best for me.”

“Why God, why him, why not me?” Fernando asked through his grief.

A Passionate and Caring Young Man

Armando was known for his kindness and his love for helping others. He was passionate about video games, football, boxing, and soccer—and his favorite player was Lionel Messi.

This year, Armando was excited to start playing football at Glenn High School. His father had just gotten his physical done, and Armando was supposed to have tryouts that same day.

“He started this year. He started this year. I got his physical and he was supposed to start today,” Fernando said, his voice filled with pride and sorrow.

Armando had big dreams. He was supposed to travel to Spain to watch FC Argentina and see Messi play in person—something he had been looking forward to for a long time.

Taking Him to Spain, One Last Time

Though Armando’s dream of seeing Messi play won’t happen, his family is honoring his wish. They are planning to cremate him and take his ashes to Spain so he can be near his favorite team, and the one Messi played 18 seasons for — FC Barcelona.

“We miss Armando,” Fernando said softly.

The Medel family is leaning on each other for strength as they remember a young man who tried to make everyone’s life better. Armando’s spirit, love, and kindness will continue to live on.
