An 18-year-old Oregon woman died in a sledding accident that involved an ATV while having fun with friends on a snow day.
The Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office says 18-year-old Lily Vanderhoff died Thursday afternoon. Witnesses say the young woman was riding in a sled that was being pulled along a snowy road by a rope attached to an ATV, KPTV reports.
Witnesses say Vanderhoff crashed into a mailbox about 2:30 p.m. on Northeast Hagey Road in Dundee. Several neighbors rushed to help the 18-year-old, one giving her CPR, but they say she died at the scene.
Deputies and emergency crews responded to the incident at 3:22 p.m.
Robert Moxley says the crash happened in front of his house.
“This is very difficult for us. It’s something that we weren’t prepared for,” Moxley said. “We did it when we were young. Accidents happen. It’s unfortunate. It’s going to be tough for our community.”
Moxley says the grieving community will come together and support one another.
“Try to wear your helmet, if you can. Think about stuff like this happens,” he said. “If you have a friend or family member, tell them you love them. It might be the last time you see them.”
Family members have set up a GoFundMe page to help Vanderhoff’s mother with funeral expenses.
“She [Vanderhoff] brought so much love and light into our lives, and her presence will forever be missed. Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort knowing she is now with the Lord, embraced by His eternal love and peace. We hold onto the hope that one day we will be reunited in His presence,” reads the GoFundMe in part.
The sheriff’s office and the Newberg-Dundee School District both offered their condolences and sympathies to the Vanderhoff family.
Vanderhoff graduated from Newberg High School in 2024, according to the school district. The district sent a letter to students and their families confirming the incident and saying resources would be available beginning Tuesday for grieving students and staff.
The sheriff’s office says the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
