He’s since made it clear he just wants to help the team win. It was reported by MassLive that Devers debated asking for a trade because of how angry he originally was about the situation.

As Opening Day approaches, it’s likely Devers will be the DH with Alex Bregman playing third.

It was a story that was talked about for weeks, but team president Sam Kennedy believes Devers did exactly what the Red Sox expected him to do.

“He’s put winning and the team above all else,” Kennedy said on MassLive’s “Fenway Rundown” podcast with Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam.

“It doesn’t mean he is gonna agree with every decision, doesn’t mean he is not one of the more competitive people on the planet. And as I said down in Florida, I think he’s the only player in uniform with a ring from 2018. This guy wants to win championships and he’s a championship-caliber player.”

The speculation about Devers’ future at the hot corner began when the Red Sox signed Bregman in February. The 2024 Gold Glove winner didn’t say much about the situation other than it was an honor to be Devers’ teammate and that he’d play wherever the Red Sox needed him.

And while Devers seemed to have his mind made up about not moving off third base — the position he’s played the entirety of his career — Kennedy pointed out that Devers has ultimately put the team above himself.

“We expect that he’ll continue to do that,” Kennedy said. “We appreciate that he’s done that. Most importantly, Raffy wants what we all want —and that’s to win baseball games.”
