Injury update: St Louis Blues Key Playmaker Out Due to Injury, Blues Face Depth Challenges against Ottawa

The St. Louis Blues will be without forward Robert Thomas in their upcoming game against the Ottawa Senators due to a recent injury. Thomas was placed on injured reserve following a fractured ankle sustained during a game against the Winnipeg Jets. The 25-year-old center exited in the second period after blocking a shot from Jets defenseman Neal Pionk. The injury is projected to keep Thomas sidelined for at least six weeks, with a return estimated around early December, sidelining him for approximately 19 games.

This injury is a significant setback for the Blues, as Thomas has been one of their key playmakers, particularly alongside Jordan Kyrou and Brandon Saad. Known for his high hockey IQ and playmaking abilities, Thomas had already tallied six points (one goal, five assists) in the first seven games this season, playing a pivotal role in both generating and converting scoring opportunities. His absence will create a void in the top line and affect the team’s overall forward depth.

To adapt to this loss, the Blues have activated Oskar Sundqvist, who was previously on injured reserve, and may also consider calling up players from their AHL affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds, to reinforce the roster. Additionally, Blues captain Brayden Schenn and young prospect Zack Bolduc are expected to see increased ice time and may help fill Thomas’ role at center. Coach Drew Bannister will have to make strategic adjustments, possibly shifting players across lines to maintain offensive momentum.

In the wake of Thomas’ injury, the Blues are dealing with an extensive list of player absences. Alongside Thomas, Torey Krug is out for the entire season following offseason surgery, and other players like Nick Leddy and Alexei Toropchenko have missed time with various injuries. With several key players on the injured list, the team faces a challenging stretch as they aim to stay competitive in the early months of the season.
