Report: Joey McGuire Discusses What’s Next After Big 12 Win Against Arizona State

Lubbock, Texas — After securing their first Big 12 victory of the season with a convincing 31-21 win over Arizona State, Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire is looking ahead with optimism, but also realism, as his team prepares for the challenges that lie ahead. The Red Raiders’ win was a pivotal moment, not just in the season but in the building of McGuire’s long-term vision for the program.

The win over Arizona State marked a turning point after a rocky start to the season for Texas Tech, which had been looking for consistency on both sides of the ball. The Red Raiders found their groove in this game, with quarterback Tyler Shough delivering a strong performance, throwing for over 280 yards and two touchdowns. The defense also stepped up, forcing key turnovers and keeping Arizona State’s offense in check.

In his post-game press conference, McGuire praised his players for their resilience and execution, while also highlighting the need for continued improvement. “I’m really proud of the way the guys played tonight,” McGuire said. “We’ve been working hard all season, and it’s great to see it come together. But this is just one win. There’s a long road ahead, and we’ve got to keep building on this momentum.”

McGuire emphasized that while the win was important, it’s only the beginning of what the team hopes to achieve in the highly competitive Big 12. With tough games against conference powerhouses like Texas and Oklahoma on the horizon, the Red Raiders are aware that they need to bring their best in every game if they want to stay competitive.

“Every game from here on out is going to be a battle,” McGuire said. “The Big 12 is stacked with talent, and we can’t afford to let up. We have to continue getting better each week — in practice, in our preparation, and in our execution on game day.”

The win against Arizona State was particularly important for McGuire, who is in his second year at the helm of the Texas Tech program. McGuire has been working to instill a new culture within the team, emphasizing toughness, accountability, and a winning mentality. His players responded to that mindset against Arizona State, but McGuire knows that there is still work to be done.

Looking ahead, McGuire also discussed the need for the Red Raiders to maintain their focus and consistency. “The Big 12 is tough, and you can’t afford to take any team lightly. We’re going to enjoy this win, but then it’s back to work. We’ve got to stay hungry and keep improving.”

Texas Tech fans are hopeful that this win can be a springboard for the rest of the season, and McGuire’s message of determination and focus will be crucial as the team navigates the challenges of the Big 12 schedule. The Red Raiders will now prepare for their next game, aiming to build on the momentum from their first conference win and continue their push for a successful season.
