The Jacksonville Jaguars’ new contract with Tyson Campbell will have a big effect on the Houston Texans.
Being the Jacksonville Jaguars means that you have to develop your own team. Despite being in Florida, the team—which isn’t even 30 years old—has had difficulty becoming a popular tourist attraction. The Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the other two teams there, and they don’t face the same problems as the Jaguars. The Jaguars are unable to sign big free agents for a variety of reasons, some justifiable and some not.
Thus, they made re-signing their players their top priority. For this reason, the Jaguars inked cornerback Tyson Campbell to a huge contract on July 23, 2024. Campbell consented to a new $76.5 million, four-year contract that includes $53.4 million in guaranteed pay. The 24-year-old, who is about to enter the last year of his rookie contract, has signed a huge contract.
With this contract, he will be among the top paid players at his position in the NFL, and other young cornerbacks may expect to pay more. The fact that Campbell isn’t among the league’s best corners makes this much more intriguing. He’s only had one great season in his three, but that didn’t stop him from getting paid like a top person. Right now, he has the seventh-highest guaranteed money amount as well as the ninth-highest deal among corners.
That’s an absurd amount for a player that isn’t very good. Derek Stingley Jr. of the Houston Texans is one of those players that has a greater ceiling, thus they’re going to break the bank, not simply be paid. Stingley’s contract at this rate will probably cause the market to reset. And that’s probably not even including getting selected to the Pro Bowl.
As of right now, Stingley is probably the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback, barring a major decline in performance in year three. That’s precisely what Campbell’s massive contract has accomplished—it has ensured that players like Stingley receive substantial compensation. You may or may not think he deserves that much money, but I’m simply letting you know that it’s likely to happen.
