Luton Town are preparing for life back in the Championship following their relegation from the Premier League last season. The Hatters were only promoted to the Premier League via the play-offs in the 2022-23 season, and while they performed admirably in the top flight, they were relegated after a disappointing campaign that saw them accumulate just 26 points.

Supporters of Luton were worried that the team would lose manager Rob Edwards this summer because he was said to be a candidate to take Kieran McKenna’s post at Ipswich Town.

McKenna, meanwhile, stayed at Portman Road, and Edwards put an end to rumors about his future by agreeing to a new four-year contract at Kenilworth Road. He will be looking to help the Hatters win promotion to the Premier League for the second time in his career.

Shandon Baptiste and Reuell Walters, who joined Luton on free transfers from Brentford and Arsenal, respectively, are the club’s two recent additions this summer.

Along with this, the club has had a number of departures, including Gabriel Osho, Dan Potts, Ryan Giles, Luke Berry, Fred Onyedinma, Ross Barkley, and Admiral Muskwe.

There will probably be a lot more arrivals and departures for the Hatters with the transfer window closing in more than a month, and we looked at two stories that might continue until the deadline.

Jesurun Rak-Sakyi

Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, a winger for Crystal Palace, is one of the most sought-after players available right now, and several Championship teams are vying for his services.

During his loan stay at League One Charlton Athletic in the 2022–2023 season, Rak-Sakyi scored a fantastic 15 goals and gave nine assists in 49 games across all competitions. However, despite a lot of interest last summer, Palace decided to keep him at Selhurst Park.

The 21-year-old played as a substitute for the Eagles a few times in the first few weeks of the previous season, but in October he sustained a hamstring injury that kept him out until late April. When he eventually recovered, manager Oliver Glasner acknowledged it would be difficult for him to establish a regular spot on the squad.

Glasner’s comments suggest another loan spell could be on the cards for Rak-Sakyi next season, and he has been linked with a number of second tier clubs in recent weeks, including Luton, Hull City, QPR and Sheffield United, while newly-promoted Premier League side Southampton have also joined the race. Sky Sports have reported that Rak-Sakyi is keen to play for Russell Martin at St Mary’s, but “Palace do not want to see him move to a Premier League rival” and instead plan to “loan him into the Championship for his development”. The Hatters will be hopeful they can convince the Eagles to allow Rak-Sakyi to come to Kenilworth Road, but with such strong competition for the winger, it seems unlikely his future will be resolved

Teden Mengi

Osho and Barkley’s exits indicate that Luton may lose some of its best players this summer as a result of relegation.

Teden Mengi, a defender, is a player the Hatters will be fighting hard to hang onto, but it may not be easy with the amount of interest he is receiving from other teams.

Foot Mercato claims that Mengi is being monitored by Nice, a French team, as a possible successor for Jean-Claude Todibo. He has also been connected to Fulham and Crystal Palace in the Premier League, and Bayer Leverkusen, the winners of the Bundesliga, may have seen him play last season.

Mengi earned his England U21 debut in a 7-0 victory over Luxembourg in March. He had a strong season for Luton last season, scoring one goal in 35 appearances across all competitions.

The Hatters are reportedly worth between €12 and €14 million, according to Foot Mercato, but they could have to wait until the end of the window to get the best deal for the 22-year-old.
