Victor Osimhen is one of the most coveted strikers in Europe at the moment, but there are doubts that he will hit the ground running in the Premier League
Glen Johnson believes that Victor Osimhen wants to join Chelsea in the January transfer window – even if the Blues are struggling to climb the Premier League table. The 24-year-old striker has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge recently, with Mauricio Pochettino eager to further bolster his frontline.
football.london understands that Chelsea wanted to sign Osimhen in the summer, but Napoli were determined to hold onto their star man so Nicolas Jackson was signed from Villarreal instead. It’s believed that the west Londoners viewed the Nigeria international as somebody who could have transformed the club’s misfortunes in front of goal but, without Champions League qualification, any bid to sign him proved difficult.
At the moment, Osimhen faces a fairly uncertain future in Naples at the moment after the the club posted a controversial video on which appeared to mock him. The Nigerian was said to be unhappy with Napoli’s social media activity, but Aurelio de Laurentiis has since denied reports linking him with an exit, insisting that ‘everyone is happy’.
Despite this, Johnson expects Osimhen to join Chelsea in the upcoming transfer window. Speaking to GG Recon, the former Blues defender said: “Regardless of what’s happening at Napoli, I believe Victor would want to join Chelsea anyway.
“However, Victor will be kicking himself that this move could happen when Chelsea are currently in transition. Of course they’re a big team and they’re going to bounce back eventually.
“But as long as Victor is willing to wait 18 months or so for that to happen, then I’m sure he’d still want to sign for them in January. If Napoli continue to struggle this season, then that will make the decision even easier for Victor.”
