Having made well over 700 games, 40 complete international caps, four Scottish Premier League titles, four Scottish FA Cups, two Scottish League Cups, a Scottish Footballer of the Year award, the 1998 World Cup finals, and a Champions League
It’s a bit of a shock to hear that a player of his evident skill never kicked a ball in England, despite spending the great majority of his managerial career here.
Central midfielder Lambert began his junior career in 1980 with Linwood Rangers. When he reached sixteen in August of 1985, local team St Mirren selected him.
After making just one appearance in the 1985–86 season, Lambert had a memorable year in 1986–87 after earning a spot on the St. Mirren roster permanently at the beginning of the next campaign.
He received a Scottish Cup winners medal in his first full season as a football player, helping his team defeat Dundee United 1-0 in extra time thanks to an Ian Ferguson winner.
The final was historic for two other reasons, despite being a terrible game: it was the last time a team made up completely of Scottish players had won the Scottish Cup, and it was also the last time both teams and both managers were from Scotland.
