Mazzolla, who has been Ime Udoka’s temporary coach during his suspension, was named the 19th head coach in franchise history on Thursday, according to an announcement made by the organization.

The Celtics (42-17) are hoping to make it back to the NBA Finals after losing to the eventual champion Golden State Warriors 4-2. They currently hold a two-game advantage over the Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference.

Mazzulla, who is 34 years old, is the NBA’s youngest coach at the moment. He will coach the team at Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game in Salt Lake City, along with his assistants.

Before taking over in an acting capacity at the beginning of the season, Mazzulla had been an assistant coach for the Celtics since 2019.

After graduating from West Virginia University in 2011, he began his coaching career as an assistant for two seasons as an NCAA Division II school at Glenville State University.

After that, he worked as an assistant for three seasons at Fairmont State before spending a season as an assistant with the NBA Gatorade League’s Maine Red Claws.

After leading Fairmont State University to a 43-17 record in two seasons and making one trip to the NCAA men’s tournament, Mazzulla was hired as head coach in 2017.
