Transfer Kelley Lynch makes first big impact to help LSU softball remain undefeated

LSU’s Kelley Lynch has not gotten off to a fast start this season, but she provided her biggest moment Saturday since transferring from Washington.

Lynch hit a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to keep the Tigers softball team unbeaten with a 3-1 victory against San Diego State in the Purple and Gold Challenge at Tiger Park.

In the nightcap, Lynch took her heroics to the circle, allowing one hit in six innings of a 2-1 victory over McNeese to improve the Tigers to 17-0.

“Kelly was huge for us tonight,” LSU coach Beth Torina said. “We needed that and  she needed that to build some confidence and get back in the swing of things. It was a good day for her.”

Lynch allowed a first-inning run to McNeese, then retired 19 consecutive batters before issuing a leadoff walk in the seventh. Sydney Berzon came on to get the final three outs for her second save of the night and third this season.

Lynch struck out five and walked two while Ali Newland provided the difference in the game with a solo home run in the third inning, her fourth of the season.
