The ideal trade partner to help Saints move on from Taysom Hill and his contract
The New Orleans Saints need to clear a ton of cap space and a move that could help with that is trading Taysom Hill. Who would be willing to trade for Hill?
The New Orleans Saints have already started the process of clearing up cap space. Despite the NFL being expected to announce a 2024 salary cap north of $240 million, New Orleans will still be around $80 million over the cap. While the franchise is great at cap space magic, the Saints won’t be able to get under the salary cap with contract restructures alone.
New Orleans will have to move on from some players. While it’s important to keep key guys like Alvin Kamara on the roster, the Saints will likely part ways with at least one of their core veterans. One name that has come up in offseason discussions is Taysom Hill.
Hill, the offensive weapon, is entering the third season of a four-year, $40 million contract. His 2024 cap hit is $15.789 million— higher than the cap hits of stars Travis Kelce and Christian McCaffrey. However, his salary for the year is only $10 million.
For the Saints to free up cap space, they’ll have to find a team willing to trade for Taysom Hill and take on his contract. Kristopher Knox, in a recent piece for Bleacher Report, named the one team that would probably be willing to do that: the Denver Broncos.
Would Broncos trade for Taysom Hill and take his contract?
The reasoning for Denver being the lone team that would entertain a Taysom Hill trade is obvious: Sean Payton and all of the other former Saints coaches on staff like Pete Carmichael Jr. It was Payton and Carmichael who came up with the idea to employ Hill the way he’s currently used. If they are interested in recreating that Taysom magic in Denver, the Saints should willingly send Hill and his contract to the Broncos.
In 2023, Hill carried the ball 81 times for401 yards and four touchdowns. He also caught 33 passes for 291 yards and two touchdowns, while completing 6-of-11 passes for 83 yards and a touchdown. He’s certainly still the versatile weapon that earned his unique contract, but the Saints should be willing to part ways considering their cap situation. If a trade is going to happen, it’ll have to be after June 1 for New Orleans to get the financial benefits.
