A member of the LSU defensive staff is no longer with the program
LSU defensive assistant John Jancek is no longer with the team after two years in various roles, The Advocate has learned.
Jancek was retained when head coach Brian Kelly fired four defensive coaches in early January, but his role moving forward had to be determined. He had one year left on his contract.
LSU also parted ways with offensive analysts Terry Malone and John McDonell, according to Football Scoop. They were on staff the past two seasons.
Jancek, a former defensive coordinator at Georgia and Tennessee, joined Kelly’s first LSU staff in 2022 as a defensive analyst. He was promoted to outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator after one season, but his role changed when defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey stepped away from the team because of a medical issue before preseason camp.
Jancek did not have much experience coaching defensive line, and LSU brought in former defensive line coach Pete Jenkins to help with the position five games into the season.
Bob Diaco, who was also retained amid the changes last month, remained listed on LSU’s updated online directory Monday, but his role would have to change if he stayed with the team.
After Jancek slid over to defensive line, Diaco coached outside linebackers and special teams last fall. LSU has since hired Kevin Peoples as its edge rushers coach and Slade Nagle as the special teams coordinator.
