Three players who could help the Rockets heading into NBA trade season

Here are three names that could help the Rockets during deadline season.

With the February 8 NBA Trade Deadline fast approaching, here’s three trades the Houston Rockets can make to improve their roster.

Kelly Olynyk

It’s no secret the Rockets could benefit from adding a backup big to their roster. While the Rockets do have Jeff Green as an option for the backup five, Green is pretty much a dinosaur at this point, so the Rockets will need a new backup for Sengun in the not-distant future.

Although Olynk is not a rim protector, he fits Ime Udoka’s hedge-and-recover scheme well. Additionally, Olynk brings three-point shooting, as he is hitting just under 43 percent at roughly 2 attempts per game. The Rocket’s best three-point shooters are Dillon Brooks shooting 40.5 percent on 4.5 attempts, Aaron Holiday shooting 40 percent on 3 attempts, Fred Vanvleet shooting 39 percent on 7.9 attempts, Jabari Smith Junior shooting 37.7 percent on 4.5 attempts per game, and Jalen Green shooting 34.3 percent on 6.4 attempts per game. These numbers show that the Rockets could use some three-point shooting help which Olynk would be able to provide.

Perhaps the largest benefit of Olynk is his adaptability. The Rockets could easily trade for Olynk and draft their rim protector of the future in this year’s draft. Houston could extend Olynk, which would allow them to bring Yves Missi, Kel’el Ware or Donovan Clingan along slowly until they are ready to contribute.

With Olynk and Oladipo making similar salaries (Olynk making $12.2 million and Oladipo making $9.45 million), Oladipo would likely be the centerpiece for an Olynk trade. In addition to Oladipo, the Rockets could part ways with either Jock Landale, Aaron Holiday or a future draft pick. I would also consider Jae’sean Tate but would look to receive an additional asset.

AJ Griffin

As previously mentioned, the Rockets are in desperate need of three-point shooters. AJ Griffin averaged 8.9 points in 19.5 minutes per game while shooting 39 percent from three, and 46.5 percent from the field in his rookie season. These numbers alongside his positive net rating suggested that Griffin would be part of Atlanta’s future, however, this season that is not the case as coach Quin Snyder has given Griffin a largely reduced role. This year, Snyder often has left Griffin out of the rotation altogether. Griffin has only played in 13 games this season and is averaging 2.5 points over nine minutes. With Griffin’s massively reduced role, the Rockets should be able to acquire him for cheap. Perhaps a package of second-round picks would suffice.

Daniel Gafford

Gafford would be the perfect candidate to pair next to Alpren Sengun due to his defensive presence in the paint. Additionally, Gafford averages 10.7 points and 7.7 rebounds while shooting 67.7 percent from the field, making him a pick-and-roll candidate for Amen Thompson and Fred Vanvleet.

NBA: Washington Wizards at Houston Rockets

Gafford did just sign a three-year, $40 million extension with Washington, however, it is clear the Wizards likely will not be competing anytime soon. A potential package for Daniel Gafford could include Victor Oladipo and Jae’Sean Tate.
