Another LSU cornerback has reportedly entered the transfer portal after rocky season

After a rocky season in which he started three games but spent the last two months away from the team, LSU cornerback Denver Harris entered the transfer portal, according to multiple reports Thursday.

Harris, a sophomore who had transferred from Texas A&M, was not with the team the last five games of the season for undisclosed reasons. He was not going to play in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Wisconsin.

LSU coach Brian Kelly said earlier this month he would have conversations with Harris and junior cornerback Duce Chestnut about their futures with the program after the semester ended. Chestnut entered the transfer portal Tuesday.

Harris was a five-star recruit in the 2022 class. He played significant snaps as a true freshman in five of Texas A&M’s first six games, but then he was indefinitely suspended after a reported locker room incident and did not play again for the Aggies.

At LSU, Harris continued to deal with disciplinary issues. At one point in preseason camp, he did not appear in a team picture and missed a week of practice.

After he did not travel to the season opener against Florida State, Harris started three straight games. He only appeared in two more the rest of the year. Harris finished with seven tackles and two pass breakups.

Harris was one of four transfer cornerbacks LSU signed last year to address a position with one returning scholarship player. Two of them, Harris and Chestnut, are now transferring for the second time in their careers. The other two, Zy Alexander and JK Johnson, suffered season-ending injuries.

Kelly said last week he feels confident in the future of the room as LSU weans itself off the transfer portal. LSU convinced redshirt sophomore Sage Ryan to stay after he said Dec. 15 he would enter the transfer portal “effective immediately.” It also has three freshmen set to return and signed four high school cornerbacks in the 2024 class.

“What we’re starting to see is a stabilization and depth within the program that really was devoid of that,” Kelly said. “I think that’s why you didn’t see us jumping into the portal. We really want to be able to develop these younger players. I feel confident in our ability to do that and have them ready to play championship football in the SEC.”
