NBA Exec Believes Donovan Mitchell Will Sign Extension With Cavaliers

Donovan Mitchell might sign an extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers after all.

The last six months of Cleveland Cavaliers basketball have revolved around the narrative that Donovan Mitchell will eventually leave for a New York team once his current contract is up.

This notion has had rival teams calling Cleveland’s front office eager to know whether or not the Cavaliers would entertain trading him. The most recent report of this came after the Cavs learned they’d lose Darius Garland and Evan Mobley for an extended period of time.

However, this narrative has made a complete 180 based on what an NBA executive recently said about Mitchell’s future. This is what they told Hoops Wire:

Donovan Mitchell 2023-24 NBA Season Preview - Fear The Sword

“I think, ultimately, Mitchell will decide the best path forward is to just sign an extension, stay in Cleveland, and let the organization keep building. He can play in New York closer to when he retires if that’s what he wants. New York isn’t going anywhere. It will always be there.”

Mitchell did pass on signing an extension with the Cavaliers before the season began, which filed even more rumors about his future. However, the reason he didn’t sign could be due to the monetary implications of signing an extension or new contract down the line.

This would be a dream scenario for the Cavs. Mitchell averaged career highs across the board in his first season in Cleveland, putting up 28.3 points, 4.4 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game.

On top of this, the backcourt of him and Garland has worked out better than anyone could’ve imagined with them both being undersized guards for their positions. Keeping Spida around should be one of Cleveland’s top goals, and this recent news should have fans excited about this possibility.
