Auburn transfer portal target Riley Leonard commits to Notre Dame
Despite rumors that Auburn was in the mix, Riley Leonard will head to Notre Dame.
sport news and updates
Riley Leonard spent his first few seasons of college football playing for the Duke Blue Devils, but after Duke Head Coach Mike Elko left for the Texas A&M job, Leonard decided to enter the transfer portal.
A few schools were quickly considered “possible landing spots” for Leonard, and Auburn was one of the listed schools.
After the original rumors, there wasn’t much smoke surrounding the Leonard to Auburn hype, and just a few days after hitting the portal, he committed to Notre Dame.
Notre Dame always seemed like the odds-on favorite to land Leonard, but it doesn’t seem like Auburn made much of a push.
It will be interesting to see if Auburn does end up bringing in a quarterback via the portal or just rolls with Payton Thorne.
Leonard would have been a good fit for Hugh Freeze’s system, but it seems this staff is either happy with who they have on roster now or have another transfer quarterback in mind.
Leonard threw for 1,102 yards and three touchdowns in 2023 while also rushing for 352 yards and four more touchdowns. He missed multiple games with injury, which is why the numbers aren’t substantial.
This is a big get for Notre Dame that will once again have them as a contender for a National Championship next season.
