No. 2 Ohio State is down to one final game in the 2023 college football regular season. On Saturday, the Buckeyes will travel to Ann Arbor for the annual rivalry game with No. 3 Michigan with everything on the line.
The winner of this game will represent the Big Ten East in the conference championship game the following weekend and have an inside track at making the College Football Playoff. The loser is likely looking at a trip to the Orange Bowl and a long and disappointing off season.
Ohio State certainly has some extra motivation heading into this game. After winning eight straight games in this series, the Buckeyes have dropped the last two contests to their rivals. This has allowed the Wolverines to go on and win the Big Ten twice, something the team hadn’t done since before the conference went to a title game.
On Tuesday, Scarlet and Gray head coach Ryan Day held his weekly press conference before the trip to Michigan Stadium. Day intentionally kept his comments relatively tame, but there was still plenty to take away from the head coach’s comments.
Let’s look at a few of his comments and what that means for this team heading into the biggest game of the year.
“I think it’s important. You have to play with emotion. You can’t let emotion play with you. I think that’s important. You have to have your emotions in check, which isn’t easy in a game like this because, as we all know, the magnitude of it all. But it’s something that we identified in the offseason and we’ll talk about this week.
For any rivalry game, really any big game, players have to be careful how they handle themselves on the field. They can’t allow moments in the game or something that happens to allow their emotions to get the best of them and they do something that ultimately hurts their team.
